For me it is important to learn the language of the country I have chosen to live the rest of my life in. While I understand that people find it difficult to get to grips with, I have in the past used tapes and cd's and books to give me some grounding. I spoke Portuguese as a child and although it is not perfect it has given me a great deal of confidence and help in developing my Spanish.
If you are considering coming to Spain to live it is very important to learn the language. The Spanish actually do appreciate it as they can be comfortable with you as you would like to be with the Spanish. My neighbours and I have a wonderful time together because of the ability to communicate.
